One of the most important parts of your home is the windows that look out to the environment and location where you live. If you are building a new home or are remodeling an older home, you can install or upgrade the look and feel of your rooms with the addition of well-designed and built windows. Here are some things to consider when thinking about windows for your home.

Window Types

When choosing windows for your home, the classic window types include:

  • Awning windows have a hinge at the top of the window. These windows open outward.
  • Hopper windows have a hinge at the top of the window. These windows open inward.
  • Sliding windows are opened by sliding one part of the window horizontally over the other part.
  • Double-hung windows are opened by sliding the lower part of the window up over the other part.
  • Casement windows pivot vertically to open. The pivot is either in the middle or on one side of the window pane.
  • Fixed windows that do not open

These are just some of the most popular window types.

Window Construction

Windows casings and sashes can be made of wood, steel, aluminum, vinyl, fiberglass and other composite materials. When designing your new windows or replacing old windows, you can always choose wood.

Wood windows last a long time and are easily repaired when weathered, worn or broken. Wood windows can be easily painted to match the color and surface texture of your home's exterior or can be painted in a contrasting color and texture if desired.

Window Ventilation

To easily warm or cool your house, during the different months of the year, you can rely on natural cross drafts. These cross drafts occur when windows are placed on opposite sides of your home.

Cross drafts allow you to rapidly cool or warm your interior rooms by opening opposing windows. The windows let the outside air flow from one side to the other.

Window Design

For interest and aesthetics, you can have uniquely shaped windows in your home.

Square or rectangular windows look good when topped with a glass arch. And round or oval windows can add interest to the look of your home when placed near square or rectangular windows.

All of these window designs can make the house look one way on the outside, and differently in the interior of the home.

Windows That Are Energy-Efficient

To keep the temperature you'd like in your home, during different seasons, look to install double or even triple paned windows. The multiple panes in these windows hold a pocket of air between the panes and are natural insulators.

When installed in your home, these windows are very economical because they can save you money on your heating and air conditioning expenses.

Windows With Light Control

If you want to install windows in a room that receives a lot of sunlight, you can consider installing windows that have been color tinted. These tints are available in blue, green, light or dark gray and bronze. You can have colored tints applied to the glass in all of your windows or only to the windows that face south or west.

Custom Windows

Some rooms often need a nonstandard window design that has been made specifically for the proportions and architectural design of that room. These include sky light windows, transom windows, interior windows between rooms and combination windows.

Look for examples of unique windows that have been installed in other homes to inspire you and give you ideas for your own home.
